How to Hold Yourself Accountable In the Life of Sales
Jun 01, 2023As a salesperson, you are an "intrapreneur", meaning you get to treat your own book of business as your own actual business. The better you are at your job, the bigger and more successful your "business " is.
Your chosen career offers a unique advantage: the freedom to shape your own schedule and lifestyle, and the flexibility to pursue personal interests in addition to your workload. However, it's essential to strike a balance and acknowledge the responsibility that comes with this flexibility.
Here are a few ways you can maximize your work-hours, in order to fully enjoy the freedom of a career in sales:
Take Control of Your Calendar
It's crucial to be focused, efficient, and effective in your work. While you have the freedom to structure your time, it's essential to set clear goals and establish a plan of action. By outlining daily, weekly, or monthly behaviors, you can feel confident that you are on track to achieve your objectives.
I personally use the Eisenhower Matrix to prioritize all of my tasks every single week. The act of removing everything from my mind and getting it all down on paper is incredibly helpful. From there, I sort everything into four categories to tackle accordingly: Urgent and Important, Not Urgent and Important, Urgent and Not Important, Not Urgent, and Not Important.
This simple timer is also a game-changer for focus and helping you stand by your time-blocking. When you flip the timer, you send your brain the signal that for whatever amount of time is on that cube, you are committed and focus on the task at hand. It also serves as a subtle way to ground yourself in how short or long a task is taking you. Sometimes, the task you've been dreading for weeks only takes 30 minutes to cross off your list. Other times, you realize how long you've been overthinking or writing and rewriting a task that doesn't need to be over complicated in the grand scheme of things.
Grounding yourself in actionable steps enables you to regain control of your time and tap into your creativity. With a solid plan in place, you can efficiently manage your tasks and explore innovative approaches. This newfound autonomy allows you to leverage your individual strengths and serve your prospects and clients wholeheartedly.
Know Your Non Negotiables
When you open your laptop or walk into work for the day, what are the tasks you know you must complete, no matter what? Identify these "non negotiables" and be sure you create space for them. I am also a huge fan of the concept of "eating the frog" - this means figuring out which task is the most difficult or daunting and doing it first before you move on to other initiatives.

Remain Rooted In Your Why
When you are connected to the reason why you do what you do, you are far more likely to want to jump out of bed in the morning and get to work. Why do you sell what you sell? Why do you work hard to earn money? Why do you show up every single day?
Get clear on your why to keep yourself grounded and determined to keep going.
Remember, you have the ability to navigate the world of sales and entrepreneurship successfully. Embrace the flexibility they offer, but also be mindful of the commitment it requires. By establishing a structured plan and seizing control of your time, you can unlock your potential, activate your individual sovereignty, and truly thrive in your professional endeavors. You've got this!
