To Become a Sales Manager, The Key is Training

It’s probably not a really good idea to take the best quarterback you have, regardless of the evidence of
football IQ, and make the promotion to Offensive Coach.

Taking the best 3rd grade schoolteacher, skipping the other stages of development and making her the Principal of the school sounds iffy.

The list could go on and on, industry and profession after another, and the results - mostly negative - are
recorded everywhere.

As a teacher (yeah, fourteen years teaching the 3rd grade) regardless of how good I was in the classroom, I
wasn’t ready to run a school until the 1st master’s degree, Administration and Supervision, and the Baltimore County Board of Education “charm school” to certify administrators. And by that time, I was sure I didn’t want to go into administration of any sort in the education field!

Same was/is true in Sales (or any other kind of management in business). There are different competencies
required for SP and SMs so if your goal is to continue in sales to the role of Sales Manager. Here is a
comparison of the skills you will need.

Sales manager competencies usually don’t come from the battlefield. They come from the classroom!
